Teaching Philosophy: Percussion is one of the most ancient forms of musical expression in human history. It is a mental, physical, and spiritual pursuit. Learning has a variety of styles including visual, auditory, tactile, and reading which must be taught together as every individual has differing abilities to absorb information. Therefore, reading music, creative experimentation, listening, observation and ear training are all equal parts of well rounded music study. Most importantly though, music is fun and should be exciting and focused on individual goals and needs. Each student is unique and should be treated as such. Lessons: There are three types of weekly lessons available: half-hour, one hour, or 90 minute lessons. It is recommended that beginners take an introductory full hour lesson for a one-time fee of $20. This will let the student and/or parents gauge their interest and see if something they would like to continue. Rates / Tuition: Tuition is calculated based on semesters. There are three teaching semesters: fall, spring, and summer. The fall semester goes from September to December, spring from January to April, and summer from May to August. There will be 15 lessons given each semester. Although there will be more than 15 weeks in each semester, this number allows for flexibility around holidays and times when I might be away, such as when I attend a music conference. Payments can be made in one of two ways: full semester tuition paid at the beginning of the semester or monthly payments made at the beginning of each month.
Expectations: It is expected that the student will attend their regularly scheduled weekly lessons on time and fully prepared. In order for the student to be fully prepared, he/she must have practiced the material assigned for that week (suggested amount of practice time varies by student) and be warmed up for the lesson. If a student must miss a lesson due to illness or other personal reasons, the lesson will be rescheduled. If it is not possible to reschedule a lesson, then the money for that lesson will be refunded. If a student misses a lesson for other reasons without advance notification (24 hours), the lesson will not be rescheduled, nor money refunded. Required Materials: It is essential for every student to have a metronome, pair of snare drum sticks, and a music stand in order to succeed. Depending on the instrument being studied, other materials may be required. |
